Rural development | Agriculture | Environment

Rural Europe is characterised by a wide variety of natural areas and cultural landscapes that have been shaped by agriculture. More than half of the European population works and lives in the countryside, which has gradually evolved in the course of centuries. However, this pace is increasing: New societal and political framework conditions, such as the population’s heightened mobility or the globalisation of markets, are making integrated rural development an ever more important field of policy.

Our work fulfils up-to-date evaluation standards und requirements, and we contribute towards their continuous advancement. The range of our services also includes: empirical data collection, primary and secondary statistical analysis, compiling data bases, economic analyses at the operational and sector level as well as the moderation of small to large groups.

Evaluation of integrated rural development programmes

Evaluations aim to contribute towards continuous improvement of rural development programmes – in order to facilitate optimal use of budgetary funds and programme quality. Intervention measures are assessed according to their results and impacts. A variety of quantitative and qualitative methods is applied, including participative methods of self-evaluation. Interviews and communication with rural actors – such as municipal representatives, farmers, producers, service providers, consumers and conservationists – are crucial sources of information to the evaluator.

Consulting regarding further development of agricultural policy instruments

In addition to evaluation, we also carry out consulting projects. Examples are studies on the opportunities and development potential of organic farming or assessments of the effectiveness of policy instruments such as the Cross Compliance regulation.

Expert reports at the interface of rural development, agriculture and the environment

We elaborate assessments that take into account the close interrelationships between agriculture and the environmental protection as well as nature conservation, and also rural development. For example, this includes development plans in the area of nature conservation or flood control measures. Based on an assessment of alternative options, we formulate recommendations that take the various interests into consideration in an optimum manner.
